Tristan Palmer did a sterling job for the team in 2011

GBmoto and rider Tristan Palmer have shelved plans to switch manufacturers for their first foray into British Superbikes next season and will remain as a Honda team working with local dealer P&H.

It is believed that team boss Mark Smith-Halvorsen had been in in talks with SMR to run a brace of Yamahas but that has now gone by the wayside. The squad now has all its parts and technical partners have been secured and the team will be looking to bench test their Superbikes mid-February, before heading to Spain for their first test on 1st of March at Cartagena.

?We considered many options in detail, before making the decision to use Hondas in BSB next year ? I think most are already aware of excellent balance of the chassis and the performance it can produce whilst complying with next year?s technical regulations. For us, it also allows us to make the most of our in house knowledge and experience, whilst retaining an independence; which I think is healthy in this sporting environment, said Smith-Halvorsen.

“Having said that, we will be relying heavily on our technical partners to help us put together and understand the performance parameters of the Superbikes and we look forward to achieving mutually beneficial returns in those areas. Our expanded team for next year is already excited and neck deep in preparation for the bikes and all sorts of new things to happen and arrive and our plans to be competitive next year are firmly underway. This is an exciting time.?

TRG Announces Five Car Lineup for the 50th Running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona

Team owner Kevin Buckler celebrates 2011 Daytona24 GT victory

Team owner Kevin Buckler celebrates 2011 Daytona24 GT victory

Petaluma, CA (December 24th, 2011) – The Racer’s Group, one of the most successful sports car teams in history, has announced that it will bring an armada of five Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars to the 50th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona in defense of its GT title from a year ago. TRG’s lineup of drivers will include defending champions, current veterans, Porsche Factory drivers and more. This is the strongest 5 car team we have ever fielded, according to team owner Kevin Buckler, whose off-season has been anything but.

“There isn’t much of an off-season for our group here at TRG,” said team owner Kevin Buckler. “We’ve all worked tirelessly to make this incredible feat happen and it started 2 months ago. The Rolex 24 has been our signature event for the last decade, and we’ve been successful because of our team’s dedication, and glued together by one thing… we like to win – especially here and we deliver.”

In early December, the team put five Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars through the tests on the high banks of the Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the Rolex 24. After leading nearly all sessions in the GT category, TRG eagerly awaits the upcoming Roar Before the 24, January 6-8th, and the Rolex 24, January 29-30th.

The GT category defending car, No. 67 Sargent & Lundy/TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, will be driven by TRG regulars Spencer Pumpelly and Steven Bertheau alongside Porsche Factory Driver Wolf Henzler and prototype veteran Marc Goosens, who recently celebrated 4 wins in the 2011 Belgian GT Championship. The No. 67 was at the top of the charts at the December test and will certainly be in contention at the 24 with this driver lineup.

Pumpelly and Bertheau who each started 2011 with a Daytona 24 win, had career 2011 seasons. Pumpelly celebrated three ALMS victories (among seven podiums), two GRAND-AM wins and a trip to Le Mans for the 24 hour European race. Bertheau had a break-out GRAND-AM season with two wins in the GT Category.

TRG’s famed No. 66 Porsche will be driven by Viper Cup Champion Ben Keating, Dominik Farnbacher, Allan Simonson and Porsche Factory driver Patrick Pilet. Farnbacher comes from a famous Porsche racing family and is a young 997 veteran. Farnbacher and Keating shared the pole sitting GT car at Daytona last season, and anticipate another strong attack. Keating, who just announced plans to run the entire GRAND-AM Endurance Championship, has been extremely strong. He had earned a 2011 Dodge Viper Cup Championship and had an impressive drive at the 2011 Petit Le Mans with TRG.

Keating will run not one, but two entries in this year’s race, sharing the seat of the No. 68 911 with 2011 GT3 Challenge Series standouts Carlos Gomez and Chris Cumming, Kevin Estre, 2011 Rookie Champion of the Porsche Mobile 1 Supercup, and one of Ireland’s top international racing drivers, Damien Faulkner. The No. 68 also sat near the top of the time sheets at the December test days.

The TRG No. 65 will be driven by Ferrari Challenge standout Bob Doyle, who spent the early part of his professional career in two-wheel racing; Mike Hedlund, who recently earned his first GT3 Challenge win; Jack McCarthy, a PCA standout; and Jim Michaelian, sports car veteran and President of the Long Beach Grand Prix, who just competed in the 24 hours of Nurburgring finishing 36th of 160 teams. All of these drivers have been working extremely hard in the off season preparing for this years event.

Rounding out the group for TRG is the No. 64 car driven by Formula One veteran, Eliseo Salazar, who will be sharing driving duties with TRG regular and Venezuelan touring car champion, Emilio Di Guida and his Venezualean Co-driver Gaetano Ardagna. They will partner with Salazar’s fellow Chilean racer Eduardo Costabal, all making their Daytona 24 debut.

TRG’s full driver lineup:

Car 64: Gaetano Ardagna, Eduardo Costabal, Emilio Di Guida, Eliseo Salazar
Car 65: Bob Doyle, Mike Hedlund, Jack McCarthy, Jim Michaelian
Car 66: Dominik Farnbacher, Ben Keating, Patrick Pilet, Allan Simonson
Car 67: Steven Bertheau, Marc Goosens, Wolf Henzler, Spencer Pumpelly
Car 68: Chris Cumming, Kevin Estre, Damien Faulkner, Carlos Gomez, Ben Keating

“This year is sure to be a great addition to the TRG history books,” states Buckler. “We are so proud to be the home for so many fantastic drivers… the TRG talent pool runs deep!! Not to mention our Porsche factory guys. To have our manufacturer support us in such a way is absolutely invaluable. The team is working harder than ever to get these guys the top notch TRG equipment they need to get to the podium – we can’t wait to get back on track. This year is going to be really special for us in so many ways. Defending champs, lots of returning drivers, a superb team of mechanics and team members and this is the 50th anniversary.”

“Even better is these guys are all my friends and we are striking out on this huge mission together. I’ll be proudly on top of the pit box the entire time supporting them all. I also have to give huge credit to our Manufacturer of choice – Porsche. I just came back from the wonderful Porsche banquet in Germany and it really gives you the feeling and sense of how truly incredible this global brand is. We are so proud to be representing them.”

“And finally – our wonderful series Grand American. They have stayed the course and now have an incredible program for us all for 2012. We are not only extremely proud to be participating once again in Daytona with our 5 car squad, but to able to be partnered with them for the entire season. They are one incredible group of team members that comprise GRAND-AM and we are committed to them. It’s gonna be a great year!!!”

Bernie Ecclestone has acknowledged that finally cracking the US market will be difficult for Formula One.

The F1 chief executive plans to take his sport first to Texas next year and then to New York the season after, with the last US Grand Prix having been held at Indianapolis in 2007.

“We’ve been there, years ago, and it’s a little bit like the rest of America, they want to see a profit before they start something and it’s not easy to do that,” he told Al Jazeera.

“We’ve got maximum two races in America, and when you consider the country is as big as Europe and we’ve got (eight) races in Europe, it’s difficult.

“If we had a lot more races there and a lot more television, it would be ok,” added Ecclestone.

Arizona born Eddie Cheever, who raced in F1 in the 70s and 80s, thinks the key is to have some American drivers on the grid.

“There would be a lot more success with American drivers,” he is quoted by CNN.

There would be a lot more success with American drivers

Eddie Cheever

“Just having one driver won’t do it,” Cheever said. “Maybe having one in F1 would galvanise F1 in America so more young drivers wanted (to race there).

“Almost all of the young drivers in America want to be in NASCAR and we need more to want to get to F1.”

Charity motocross race Tanel Leok and Friends was held this autumn for the third time. Like last two years all profits of this unique fun event were donated to children who have lost their ability to move through an accident. Just few days before Christmas 12 000 euros, raised in this years Tanel Leok and Friends, was turned over to the disabled children and their families.

This year Tanel Leok and Friends was part of Estonian Motocross Weekend which was held in Viljandi, on the Holstre-Nõmme motocross track. During the weekend thousands of spectators were enyoing the races where MX stars were having fun. We saw sidecar team Tanel Leok-Shaun Simpson, also Evgeny Bobrychev, Leok, Simpson and Ivo Steinbergs racing mopeds. Once again there was an auction with riding gear from top riders all over the world up for grabs.

Tanel Leok: ?I?m satisfied with the result of this years fundraiser. We kept the level we have reached in last two years and I hope it will help many families. From the organization side the event has gone more professional for that I?d like to thank my friends who are worked hard for all this. In three years we have raised 35 000 euros for disabled children and I think we?re moving in the right direction. Tanel Leok and Friends is also well known in motocross world and I?d like to thank all the riders participating in our charity motocross race or giving their staff for the auction. See you all in Estonia, in Tanel Leok and Friends 2012.?

KTM?s 2012 690 Duke isn?t just an evolution of the hard core Duke – it?s a complete revolution: an all-new bike – 90% new in fact, with just 10% of its components shared with its predecessor.

The biggest surprise is in the looks department. Gone is the hard-edged supermotard appearance and in its place a more regular-looking naked bike albeit with KTM?s trademark aggressive styling and graphics.

The new design has been borne out of KTM?s desire to build a real world and useable bike. The new ergonomics have the rider sitting ?in? the bike on a relatively wide, comfortable seat instead of perched on top of a narrow one. The seat height is now 30mm lower which improves the overall ergonomics significantly, increases comfort and minimises buffeting.

On looks alone it would be easy to think that the new bike has been toned down but having ridden the bike for over six hours on a multitude of different roads I can assure you it hasn?t.

On the demanding and twisty mountain roads of Gran Canaria it?s an absolute blast to ride thanks to its perfect 50/50 weight distribution. It may not have the same aggressive looks as its predecessor, but don?t be fooled into thinking that it?s no less fun to ride.

KTM claim an impressive 70bhp for its 690cc single and combined with a refreshing light weight of 150kg results in a potent and engaging bike to ride. The new styling, comfort and ergonomics positions it in the same market place as the Kawasaki ER6 or Ducati Monster, but despite being a single in a world of twins it offers a superior or comparable power to weight ratio to its rivals.

Two decades ago, ten-time winner Berger shared the McLaren garage with Ayrton Senna, whose own nephew Bruno went on to race in F1 with HRT and Lotus/Renault.

Now, 17-year-old Lucas Auer – the son of former BMW motor sport director and Toro Rosso co-owner Berger’s sister Claudia – is getting serious about his single seater racing.

This year, he raced in the JK Racing Asia Series and was recently crowned champion.

“It’s really important for my future,” he said of the title. “I had to win this season and now I can see what I will do in the future.”

Last week, according to motorline.cc, the young Austrian tested a F3 Euroseries car at Valencia, with 52-year-old Berger watching on.

First rides & tests

 22 December 2011 16:00

I thought Brussels was an easy day?s ride from MCN?s Peterborough HQ, so was first to agree to join senior reporter Steve Farrell on his rabble-rousing EU protest ride last month.

In my brain, I foresaw a quick blat to Dover, a tootle down the E40 from Calais, chips and mayonnaise for lunch followed by some shouting at MEPs then a dash back to Blighty. What could be finer?

My over-confidence was partly the V-Strom?s fault. Such is its superb long distance ability that the distance and weather held no fears. A supremely comfy saddle, 250-mile tank range and decent weather protection meant the idea of not enjoying the ride didn?t cross my mind.

Unfortunately ? and not for the first time ? my brain had omitted a few facts.

Firstly, Brussels and back is 600 fricking miles, not the 375 I had in my head. I?m sure the likes of Nick Sanders rattle off 600 before breakfast, but I don?t. I prefer to do zero miles before breakfast. Secondly, by necessity, there would be lots of faffing ? other people?s fuel stops, getting lost, the protest ride, getting lost again, missing chunnel trains, etc. This meant the day would be very, very long.

And so it transpired. I rode for 11 solid hours out of 14, and though delirious with tiredness on the final slog up the M11, was coherent enough to remember several things about the V-Strom:

1) On the middle setting, the screen creates an airflow that blows water droplets down and off my visor. In fog and rain, this means you don?t have to wipe your visor above 30mph. If a Suzuki aerodynamicist did this on purpose, I would like to nominate them for a Nobel Prize.

2) There are few faster ways of getting from Calais to Brussels and back to Calais than a V-Strom. Plenty of bikes will cruise at higher speeds, but not many can manage the distance of 250 miles without stopping for fuel. And when they do, the V-Strom will thrum past at 95mph, averaging 54mpg. This ability enabled me to catch an earlier chunnel train home than deputy editor Ped Baker after I lost him in Brussels?

3) After an hour at 80mph, slight tingles in the right bar give my thumb vibration-related ?white finger?, meaning it gets cold despite bar muffs. However, because I attached the bar muffs to the bar-end weights, I suspect the muffs might have caused the tingle in the first place. Fascinating muff-based experiments are in progress to determine the solution.

4) The V-Strom saddle gives me 90 minutes of uninterrupted riding before I start shuffling. Sliding back to the rear of the seat gives another 30 minutes. It?s one of the comfiest saddles I?ve ever used.

5) Watching the mpg display is addictive, and can alert you to all manner of mechanical problems. For example, I immediately knew something was wrong when my 80mph cruising mpg dropped from the usual 59 to 54. After careful examination I eventually deduced the bar muffs were blowing onto the brake lever at motorway speeds?

Go East young woman: Cyndie Allemann to race in the new i1 Super Series

Abu Dhabi, UAE, December 19, 2011 ? A busy 2012 winter for Cyndie Allemann: the racing star from Switzerland was selected as one of the drivers to take part in the inaugural i1 Super Series, starting with the media day and shakedown this week. She will have the opportunity to race wheel-to-wheel with established international stars such as 1997 F1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, and current and past F1 drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi, Karun Chandhok, Giancarlo Fisichella, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jean Alesi, but also against talented young Indian drivers.

To take part of a new international series is an exciting challenge for me.

Cyndie Allemann

From the first race on January 22 in Sepang (Malaysia) to the season finale in Abu Dhabi (UAE) on March 10, Cyndie will have the chance to race the Radical SR3 prototype car on different world class circuits.

?To take part of a new international series is an exciting challenge for me. I?m super motivated because the cars are the same for everyone, and also, I will have the opportunity to race on famous international circuits. I?ve raced in Abu Dhabi before, but Sepang, Bahrain, Losail and Buddh International Circuit will all be new experiences to me. I?m very grateful that the promoter Machdar Motorsports has thought about me to race against this very selective group of drivers.?

Starting the new year by racing in the Radical SR3 prototype car is also an excellent learning experience for Cyndie, since she is currently planning her full racing program for the rest of the 2012 season.

?I?m eager to try and race the Radical SR3 prototype car: it?s a competitive car and ideal for this very unique format of two races on a single day. It?s also a fun car to drive and can?t wait to see what I can learn from the experience and how I will be able to use it, moving forward with my career. I?m really looking forward to have fun racing in this series.?

Not only Cyndie will race in a new series, but she also has an interesting perspective on racing in India, Asia and the Middle East:

Cyndie Allemann

?The racing part is exciting, but I?m also looking forward to be exposed to new cultures and new countries, as most of them will be totally new to me. It is important that I also take this experience as a way to evolve as a person. Also, the future development of motor racing should grow in emerging markets. Contributing to this growth and being among the first to support such a project for a country like India is important to me. Auto racing is still a new sport in India and I?m happy to play a role, even a small one, in the development of the sport in this wonderful country and helping young Indian drivers.?

About Cyndie Allemann:

Cyndie Allemann: a World class driver, top athlete and brand ambassador. Always a fan favorite, whether in Europe or in the USA, 25 years old Cyndie Allemann was literally born for speed.

Her 18-year racing career has seen her compete at the highest levels in many different series and tracks around the World: karting (winning the European junior title when she was only thirteen), open-wheel (EuroF3, Indy Lights, etc.), GT (FIA-GT1 World Championship) and endurance racing (GT1 podium at Spa in the Le Mans Series, 24 Hours of Le Mans, etc.)

She is training hard on and off the track while working on several new opportunities in different forms of racing for the 2012 season.

57342 Dungeys450 US SX 2012 prepping 0058 e1318526023525 Ryan Dungey: ?As a team, I think we have a great atmosphere?

In just two seasons of Supercross Class competition, Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., is already considered one of the fastest riders on the planet. In 2010, the five-year pro became just the second rookie in history to win the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, crown and came a mere 10 points short of defending his title one year ago. After two strong seasons in the Supercross Class, Dungey is making the biggest move of his young career for 2012, joining Red Bull KTM.

Since turning pro late in 2006, Dungey has ridden for the Factory Suzuki effort. He was handpicked by legendary rider and team manager Roger DeCoster to become the new face of the brand following the retirement of Ricky Carmichael, and became an instant sensation. Following two years of championship-contending success in the Supercross Lites Class, Dungey captured his first title in 2009 with the Western Regional Supercross Lites Championship, and subsequently captured three more championships over the next year-and-a-half to claim every AMA-sanctioned title by the age of 20.

Throughout the span, Dungey achieved his success under the tutelage of DeCoster, becoming a faster, smarter and more confident rider every step of the way. Dungey?s maturation into a star was evident, and it culminated with the most successful rookie season of all time during the 2010 campaign.

After climbing his way to the top of the motocross world, last year Dungey was forced to deal with the departure of DeCoster from Suzuki, a brand that he guided and brought to the pinnacle of the sport. Dungey?s mentor assumed the team manager role at KTM, who revamped its factory racing efforts in America in hopes of replicating its European success, and after seeing what he did for Suzuki, tabbed DeCoster to do so. With DeCoster no longer in the fold at Suzuki, many wondered how Dungey would fare. While he did not post the same numbers as his championship-winning season, Dungey still saw success in 2011, and ultimately was a fixture in the title fight until the final race of the year.

While Dungey?s one lone victory of last season suggests it was an off year for the reigning champion, he was in fact one of the most consistent riders in the series, posting 13 podium finishes in 17 races, the most of any rider in Monster Energy Supercross. In fact, if not for losing a drive chain in a freak occurrence at Anaheim 2, which resulted in a DNF, Dungey very well could have secured back-to-back titles.

Nevertheless, without DeCoster by his side, it appeared as if Dungey was not the same rider of his illustrious rookie year. With his contract coming to an end, Dungey revealed he would not return to Suzuki prior to the end of the 2011 racing season, making him the biggest free agent in many years. The rumor mill was in full effect almost immediately, with most indications pointing to a reunion between Dungey and DeCoster at KTM. Regardless of where he landed, it was sure to be the most newsworthy move of the offseason.

News of Dungey negotiating with the likes of Joe Gibbs Racing, American Honda, and Chad Reed at TwoTwo Motorsports came to light over the course of the next couple months before the formal announcement that Dungey was heading to KTM was given at the beginning of October.

?Roger wasn?t a deciding factor in my move to KTM, but it definitely helped,? said Dungey. ?I?ve worked with him from the beginning of my professional career and we have four or five years under our belt. I know that if Roger says the bike and the team are good, then it is. I guess the trust I have in him, our friendship, and what we?ve been able to build over the last few years has helped and made the transition in coming to KTM a little easier. But more than anything, the level of commitment to win races and win championships was a challenge I looked forward to.?

In DeCoster?s first season at KTM, the team made significant strides, with Andrew Short and Mike Alessi giving the brand moderate success. Now, with a full year of his influence behind them, Red Bull KTM is ready to challenge for a championship with Dungey. The new era for both Dungey and the brand kicked off just a couple weeks following the announcement, with an impressive runner-up showing at the Monster Energy Cup.

?I?m really glad I raced the Monster Cup,? said Dungey. ?I first decided not to because of the amount of time I had on the bike. I just wanted to be ready. But, to be honest, things were going really well. The bike was coming along a lot quicker than we all thought. From that point forward, we figured let?s go out there and race to see what we got. Although we didn?t win, we came in second, and I think it was a great night. And, we were able to walk away from that race knowing what we needed to improve on. We went back to the drawing board to see what we can do, and the next week (we) were out there testing, making improvements.?

The chance to compete prior to the start of the Monster Energy Supercross season could prove to be invaluable for Dungey and his team in the long run. With a total of four past champions set to line up on the starting gate in January, the Supercross Class field is arguably the deepest it?s ever been in over 30 years of Monster Energy Supercross. Any and every advantage that a team or a rider can get could ultimately be the deciding factor in the championship next May.

?I think for the 2012 supercross season we have our work cut out for us, for sure,? said Dungey. ?There?s a lot of great riders out there and a lot of talented people, but I think in the long run for us, we (need to) work hard and do what we have to do. I think we?re driven and will do all that we can on any given night.?

Dungey continued,

?In the amount of time I?ve been on the bike, things are moving well. Right form the get-go, I felt like the bike was really comfortable. I adapted to it really well. From that point forward, it was just minor changes. You can do so many things with a factory bike that it allows you to make something fit and work the way you want it to. I think it?s just been a matter of finding those little spots that are going to help. It?s been great. As we keep moving along, making more and more progress, it?s really nice because nobody settles. Everyone is always pushing for more, so for us, we?re digging deeper and deeper to get better and better.?

Even with a new team and being saddled with so much change for the first time as a pro, Dungey?s goal is to obviously win a championship. That same goal is at the heart of Red Bull KTM, and with the proven guidance of DeCoster at the helm, the 2012 season marks the brand?s best chance to achieve success in the Supercross Class, a division in which it has never won. No stranger to making history, Dungey eagerly awaits the opportunity to write some more.

?As a team, I think we have a great atmosphere,? said Dungey. ?There are a lot of hard-working people and everyone is 100% dedicated to win races, as am I. That?s what (means) more for me. Throughout my career, I?ve tried to surround myself with good people ? people who are driven, who want to get to that (next level) and are also knowledgeable. I think we?ve got a great group of people with a lot of knowledge and it doesn?t hurt that we all want to win, which in the long run brings success and achievement.?

The 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season gets underway in just a matter of weeks, from Angel Stadium on Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday, January 7.

2012 British Superbike

What Isle of Man TT fan could forget the name Ian Hutchinson? The 32-year-old West Yorkshire native went on to win all five solo races in the 2010 Isle of Man TT, immediately entering the history books.

But after amazing the 2010 IOM TT crowds, Hutchy crashed at Silverstone while competing in British Supersport, breaking his leg. This injury sidelined Hutchinson for most of 2011, including the 2011 Isle of Man TT. Hutchy did compete at the Macau Grand Prix in November, though, taking the final podium position.

But for 2012, Hutchy plans to be fully back to competition; besides the 2012 Isle of Man TT, where he’ll compete against main rivals Guy Martin (Suzuki) and John McGuinness (Honda), Hutchinson will contest his first complete season in the British Superbike Championship.

Hutchy has signed with Swan Yamaha, and will join the reigning British Superbike Champion Tommy Hill aboard a Yamaha YZF-R1.

Ian Hutchinson (Swan Yamaha YZF-R1) says: “Next year is definitely a big one for me and I have never been looking forward to a season so much. I am glad that I had the opportunity to race at the end of this year as I have always had faith in my own ability, but I just needed to prove to any doubters that I could still race.

“I have wanted to race in BSB for several years, but the right opportunity has never been there and that makes 2012 a big year for me. For the last three years I have won in the British Supersport and National Superstock classes, but I haven’t really had full seasons to be able to fight for the title. I think the knowledge I have of riding a Superbike on the roads will help me, and in that respect the new rules will too as I have never ridden with all the gizmos.

“I tested the Swan Yamaha before Macau and it is a great bike to ride; everything about it feels good so I can’t see any reason why I can’t run at the front.

“I am over my injury now; I currently still use the right-hand gear shift that the team adapted for me to run at Macau, but it is not a concern. The team have got it working perfectly for me so I just feel ready to get out testing as soon as possible.

“I think the injury and the year just watching from the sidelines has definitely made me want it more; I want to prove that I can still be successful and I am determined to show that.

“The crash doesn’t faze me and I don’t think of it as traumatic, but as an experience. I was just unlucky that I got hit and injured the leg so badly. As a rider it hasn’t affected me as something like that can happen at any time.

“Now I just want to race and my aim is to get the results myself and the Swan Yamaha team deserve both in BSB and at the TT.”

Shaun Muir (Swan Yamaha Team Owner) says: “Everyone at SMR has been working behind the scenes since the end of the 2011 season. Our goals as a team and for Yamaha are to win the BSB title and win at the Isle of Man TT. We reviewed our options carefully and I have been impressed with Ian Hutchinson, not only his race craft but also his ability to work with the team and his determination to return from injury.

“He has spent a lot of time in the garage with us this year and his recent performance at the Macau Grand Prix proved he is over his injury now. Hutchy will be with the team for two seasons (2012 and 2013) and we are committed to him; I really want to turn him into the complete racer that can win in both disciplines. He has the potential so we want to be able to give him the opportunity to excel.”

Mark Alldred (Swan marketing manager at Republic Technologies (UK)) says: “We are delighted that Tommy is back to run the number one plate and also to have such a successful TT rider with Ian as we prepare for our first visit to the Isle of Man. We wish them both the best of luck for the new season.”

2012 Yamaha Motorcycle

Given glowing reviews by the Yamaha Champions Racing School in Utah, the FZ1 is arguably the most underestimated motorcycle in Yamaha’s lineup.

Powered by an earlier version of its flagship YZF-R1 (and therefore without the crossplane crankshaft) the 20-valve FZ1 is incredibly fast and has had its quirky fuel injection issues long cured.

Firm, fully adjustable suspension and a sporting chassis allow impeccable and agile handling coupled with stable road manners.

The aggressive ergonomics and truly confidence-inspiring ride make this a sportbike through and through.

2012 Yamaha FZ1 Quick Stats:

  • ENGINE TYPE: DOHC inline-4
  • BORE x STROKE: 77mm x 53.6mm
  • COMP. RATIO: 11.5:1
  • TRANSMISSION: 6-speed
  • WHEELBASE: 57.5 inches
  • RAKE: 25.0 degrees
  • WET WEIGHT: 487 pounds
  • PRICE: $ 10,590

Prior to the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, a few of the accolades on Australian native Chad Reed?s resume included two Supercross Class championships and a Supercross Lites Class title. Last year, he became an entrepreneur by starting his own team and business, Two-Two MotorSports, and much like his racing ventures, he was a successful businessman, finishing second overall.

It would be the first time in Reed?s life he would not only be challenged to win races; he was responsible for managing the nine employees, something he?s never done before. He finished the year with one wins and an additional nine podium finishes.

?Being an owner is fun for me ? I enjoy working with multiple personalities and working on how to put the right combo together,? said Reed. ?It?s a successful relationship for all. I play a very active role as team owner; nothing gets done without my approval.?

One of the most consistent riders in the field, Reed has 141 career Supercross Class starts, and holds the record for the most podium finishes at 114. His approach to racing has worked in the past, and he doesn?t plan on changing anything for 2012.

?I have the same strategy as always: to win,? said Reed. ?To win it, you must be in it. You have to be on the podium every week and win when you can. I try to be on the podium every week and win when you can.?

Over the years, Reed and fellow two-time Supercross Class champion James Stewart have engaged in some of the sport?s greatest battles driving fans out of their seats and begging for more. With a season that is highlighted by nine different Supercross Class race winners, their rivalry will hardly be a subplot.

?James and I have a lot of respect for each other and what gets in the way is we both want to win and neither of us let anything get in the way of that,? said Reed. ?My job is to show up prepared and do what I do best.?

As one of the sport?s elder statesmen, Reed believes that his knowledge is one of the most valuable assets and says a price tag can?t be put on his experience over the years.

?You can?t buy experience,? said Reed. ?Since I started racing, a lot has changed, and I wouldn?t change a thing about my career. I feel like I have a much better understanding of the sport. As far as training goes, I?ve stepped it up to take on the kids.?

Reed, who is from Australia, began racing in the U.S. in 2003, winning the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class championship as a rookie and moving into the Supercross Class the following season.

London?s bus lane scheme made permanent

London?s bus lane scheme made permanent

By Steve Farrell -

General news

 21 December 2011 12:48

Motorcyclists have been granted permanent access to bus lanes in London, the capital?s transport authority announced today.

The decision follows a three-year trial of the measure which has helped smooth traffic flow, cut emissions and reduce journey times according to Transport for London (TfL).

Cycle collisions also fell significantly by 11.6% in the latter 18months of the trial compared to before it began.

Cycle groups have campaigned against the measure, claiming increased motorcycle speed makes bus lanes more dangerous for their members.

TfL said enforcement had led to a 6.5% reduction in motorcycles speeds in bus lanes, with the number of riders breaking the limit down by a fifth.

The trial on London?s major roads, or ?red routes?, will be made permanent from January 23.

Ben Plowden, TfL?s Director of Better Routes and Places, said the trial had ?shown reduced journey times and environmental benefits with no significant safety issues thrown up for motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users.

“The additional enforcement measures we introduced have also helped reduce average speeds for riders in bus lanes, delivering benefits for all road users in London.  This is an important measure which has proved popular with motorcyclists across the capital.”

Steve Kenward, CEO of the Motor Cycle Industry Association, said: “Industry strongly welcomes TfL?s decision. Allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes sends a clear message to road users that motorcycling helps to reduce commuter journey times, traffic congestion and CO2.

“Like cyclists, motorcycle users face vulnerabilities which bus lane use helps to mitigate and we support TfL?s recognition of motorcycling as part of the Mayor?s strategy to smooth traffic flow and reduce CO2.”

Paddon takes next step into Super 2000 WRC

New Zealand?s top rally driver, Hayden Paddon has announced he will contest the FIA Super 2000 World Rally Championship in 2012 with co-driver John Kennard in a Skoda Fabia S2000 rally car with the support of new sponsors and a new Spanish team.

Having successfully won the Production World Rally Championship title in 2011 ? the first driver from the Southern Hemisphere to ever do so ? Paddon is forging ahead with his international competition goals by climbing to the next rung on the ladder of world rallying. The Super 2000 World Rally Championship (SWRC) is the key feeder series for the main game, the FIA World Rally Championship, and it?s an important and exciting step forward for the likeable and talented Kiwi.

Paddon?s SWRC plan was announced on 20 December 2011 after several months of talks with various European teams and sponsors.

I am ecstatic about the move to Super 2000; it?s a fantastic opportunity.

Hayden Paddon

?I am ecstatic about the move to Super 2000; it?s a fantastic opportunity,? says the 24-year-old from Geraldine. ?I was lucky enough to test the Skoda Fabia S2000 in Europe a couple of months ago and it was an incredible car to drive. The S2000 is a full blown racecar and is basically a WRC car without the aero and turbo.?

Paddon?s car will be run by ASM Motorsport, based in Barcelona and Paddon, with long-time partner Katie Lane, will move to the Spanish city.

?Several key personnel at ASM Motorsport have been involved with the Skoda and Seat world rally teams in the past and they are very enthusiastic and passionate about this project. The target for the whole team is to win the championship,? says Paddon.

One factor in the team?s decision to move to the S2000 Skoda is related to the fact that Skoda?s parent company Volkswagen has confirmed its entry into the WRC in 2013. VW management signed star French driver Sebastién Ogier last month, confirming Ogier will compete in all rounds of the 2012 WRC in a similar Skoda S2000 car to the one Paddon will drive and thus providing an outstanding benchmark for all SWRC competitors.

?Sebastién is one of the fastest drivers in the WRC at present and having the chance to compete with him will be an honour and also a challenge,? says Paddon. ?It will help us to lift to another level and while he will be hard to beat, he certainly gives us a good target to aim for.?

Blenheim?s John Kennard continues as Paddon?s co-driver, taking the highly successful rally partnership into its seventh season and ensuring that as Paddon strives to achieve new goals, he can also count on the consistent support and experience of his highly-regarded co-driver.

Paddon?s decision to drive a Skoda was also influenced by a new relationship with one of New Zealand?s largest motor vehicle importers and retailers, the Giltrap Group.

Hayden Paddon

Hayden Paddon

Photo by: Hayden Paddon Rallysport Global Ltd

?It?s a great honour to have a new partnership with the Giltrap Group, largely thanks to Colin and Richard Giltrap, who are huge supporters of New Zealand motorsport. The Giltrap Group is also the distributor for Skoda in New Zealand, so there?s a natural link with this new partnership.?

Paddon has also confirmed a personal sponsorship with PlaceMakers New Zealand, the building supplies company which was a key supporter of his 2011 rallying.

Paddon?s goal is to win the SWRC title in 2012. SWRC competitors are required to contest seven of eight selected World Rally Championship events. Paddon has elected to drive the S2000 Skoda in Rally Sweden, Rally Portugal, Rally New Zealand, Rally Finland, Wales Rally GB, Rally France and Rally Spain, dropping the year?s first SWRC event, Rally Monte Carlo.

?With Monte Carlo taking place in January, we have given ourselves a little more time to prepare for the next SWRC event, Sweden, which runs from 10 to 12 February. It is also going to be special to have the chance to do Rally New Zealand as one of our rounds and bring our new car home for our supporters to see.?

Paddon admits he gave serious thought before moving away from Subaru for his next season of competition, after such a successful year with the Japanese marque in 2011.

?We have had a great relationship with Subaru ? we have enjoyed phenomenal support from the team which ran our Subaru STI, Symtech Racing, as well as Subaru personnel in New Zealand, Japan and Europe. It was a hard decision to not continue with Subaru, but we have to keep moving forward in the best manner to help make my ultimate goal of winning the World Rally Championship a reality. The next step from where we were was obviously S2000 so that?s what we?ve done.?

When Paddon says ?we?, he is referring to the management team which now helps the star Kiwi with his professional rallying career. The team includes four directors along with shareholders of Hayden Paddon RallySport Global Ltd.

HPRG director Peter Swaney notes: ?This is a very exciting time for both Hayden and HPRG as we continue to move forward in the WRC. Of course the biggest battle is funding but we are very lucky to have a large group of passionate supporters from New Zealand behind us. The hard work will continue throughout the year and into next year as we continue to look for opportunities to keep the momentum going.

?The formation of HPRG at the start of 2011 has been pivotal in continuing success for Hayden?s career and allowing him to follow the dream he and so many of his supporters share. Not all the funding is currently in place for 2012 but the company is working hard to secure this, as well as starting planning for 2013 which will involve Hayden piloting a WRC car. In the meantime, 2012 promises to be an exiting year.?

Paddon?s 2012 campaign is supported by Giltrap Group, PlaceMakers, Skoda, Cameron Sea and Airfrieght, All About Signs, Granger Design, HTC Sportsworld, Castrol, Raiseys, New Balance and Chicane Racewear.

The team has launched a brand-new website www.haydenpaddon.com to coincide with this SWRC announcement and they also share news and results via text updates, Twitter and Facebook.

Thundersport bosses will make the Golden Era Superbike class a reality in 2012 with the addition of the new class which is dedicated back-in-the-day Superbikes that have nothing in the way of rider aids.

The idea, first mooted by series organiser Dave Stewart earlier this year, will see the likes of ZXR750, GSX-R750s, Yamaha YZF750s and some leftfield bikes like Triumph’s 955i take to the track. The series will be sponsored by Moto Direct who are providing entrants with some serious kit discounts.

IOt was the very popularity of Superbike racing in the 1990s that brought about the ?born again biker? phenomenon. In the UK market Grand Prix were in decline with a low point of just six bikes on the premier class grid and a crowd figure reputed to be less than 10,000 for the British Grand Prix,” said Stewart.

“Superbike racing was where it was at and the crowds flocked to both Donington Park and Brands Hatch to watch Scott Russell, Giancarlo Falappa, Yasutomo Nagai, Colin Edwards, Aaron Slight, Carl Fogarty, Anthony Gobert and a host of other riders who didn?t complain about a bit of fairing bashing, they actually expected it and so did the fans.”

Regulations will be ?Open Class? with no tuning restrictions, but restricted to parts that were available before 2003 (except tyres). Interchanging parts between compatible models will be allowed as will any suspension and any wheels. Period engined specials will be catered for on a case by case basis with a view to accepting models that fit in with both the time period and the spirit of the rules (NR750 oval pistoned bikes need not apply).

Eligible bikes are:

Ducati 888 all models (926 & 955 kit permitted)
Kawasaki ZXR750 all model years (840 kit permitted)
Yamaha OW01 all model years (840 kit permitted)
Suzuki GSXR 750 SRAD all model years

MRW KTM’s Joan Pedrero Biography

Born in 1978, Joan Pedrero, the current teammate of three-time Dakar winner Marc Coma, has a wide experience in the enduro world. Nevertheless, his dream was to compete one day in the Dakar, live the adventure of his life. He had the opportunity in 2008 with a humble team with a solidarity aim.

With the excitement of a rookie, Pedrero went to Lisboa to take part in the mythical African race, but just that year the organizers were forced to cancel the race due to terrorist threats.

The rider from Canet de Mar took the blow and next year crossed the ocean to be at the start of the first edition of the South American Dakar. The beginning was not as expected. An electrical failure forced him to lose 11 hours in the first day.

However, after this first setback everything went better. The rookie started to gain confidence and did not disappoint. He was able to finish among the top 10 in one of the stages and after 15 hard and intensive days, Joan Pedrero achieved his aim: to complete the Dakar in his first participation -in 42nd. position.

After his first experience in South America, Pedrero was not sure if he would be able to continue taking part in that magnificent race. The high budget required by the Dakar was a barrier difficult to overcome by an amateur rider. But thanks to many efforts, in 2010 he took the step he needed to be known in the raids world. With a rented KTM he was able to take the tenth place in the Dakar, becoming the best classified Spanish and Amateur rider in the race.

That performance gave him widespread recognition and the possibility to enter the MRW KTM Team together with Marc Coma in the following year. Pedrero accepted the challenge and became the assistant of the three times Dakar winner. Together they achieved a faultless result in that edition: Coma won the race for the third time and Pedrero achieved the fifth final position. A feat that allowed him to enter the elite of the Dakar; a dream come true.

For the 2012 Dakar edition, the challenge for the MRW rider is even harder. After showing his great potential in a race as tough as the Dakar, the bar he has set with his amazing performance of last year is very high. His advantages are his humility and his willingness to keep progressing and learning.

56732 Nagl MXGP11 R15 a02 1024 220x146 Max Nagl out of action until New Year

It is no secret that Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing?s Max Nagl of Germany put on a heroic display in the second half of the 2011 MX1 World Championship season, riding through the pain of a serious back injury. Max underwent corrective surgery in Belgium at the end of the season after opting to delay the surgical intervention until all the races were over.

Due to some additional complications that arose from the treatment, Max will now undergo a second operation. Despite quite a lot of physical discomfort, he remains firmly optimistic about a successful outcome and is looking forward to returning to training and the factory team.

Following the second operation, Max will be required to take one week?s complete bed rest and then take it easy for another month. Following that, he should be able to start physical training and will go to Red Bull?s high-tech training center in Austria where he will work under the guidance of medical and physical training experts. If all this goes according to plan, the German rider will then be able to move into the next stage of his rehabilitation and resume training on his new KTM racing machine.

Claudio de Carli, manager of the Red Bull Teka KTM?s MX1 lineup said he was very much looking forward to Max making a full recovery and rejoining the factory team for intensive training. ?I hope to have Max with us as soon as possible and to see him ride the new bike. He is an elite athlete so he is very strong mentally and in good physical condition. We are confident that his recovery will be quick and completely successful. I am very much looking forward to seeing him ride the new KTM 450!?
Scheduled to contest the 2012 MX1 World Championship with teammate and reigning world champion Tony Cairoli, Max Nagl is slated to ride the new 2012 edition of the KTM 450 SX-F factory bike next year.

BMW Motorrad UK to provide security on all motorcycles in 2012

Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, anyone who purchases a BMW motorcycle in the UK will have an additional level of theft protection.

This is due to BMW Motorrad fitting all motorcycles with Datatag’s industry-leading system to deter theft. And the best part – the theft system will be added free of charge.

BMW Motorrad says: “Datatag’s advanced system enables the identification of stolen motorcycles and parts, thereby assisting the police in prosecuting motorcycle thieves and making BMW motorcycles less attractive to criminals.”

The Datatag system utilizes four-sophisticated layers of security: a near-invisible ultra-violet etching, hidden RFID transponder tags, microscopic coded number dots for recognition and prominent, tamper-proof Datatag markings to provide a visual theft deterrent, BMW says.

These security markings are fully approved by the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre (Thatcham) and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

And besides adding an extra sense of security, the datatag system is recognized by the insurance industry; many insurance companies in the UK will provide discounts on bikes with Datatag systems.

This system is only available in the UK, but many will surely be hoping this goes worldwide.

Adrian Roderick (general manager of BMW Motorrad UK) says: “We understand that security is a concern for our customers. Whilst BMW’s motorcycle anti-theft systems have proven to be some of the best in the industry, and our motorcycles among the least affected by theft, any additional security that makes thieves think twice about stealing a motorcycle is a significant benefit to an owner.

“Statistics show that BMW’s current factory-fitted immobilizers, available on all-but-one of our models, and optional alarm systems prove very effective. But the industry must do all it can to deter theft and also assist the police in prosecuting thieves once vehicles have been recovered. The industry-leading Datatag systems make motorcycles less attractive for criminals to steal and easier for the police to identify and return to the owner.”

Kevin Howells (Managing Director of Datatag) says: “We are delighted that BMW Motorrad UK has appointed us as their preferred supplier. Our systems are the most complete and effective theft deterrent on the market today. This multi-layer approach ensures that when it comes to theft deterrent and vehicle identification, Datatag is the only choice: a fact confirmed by Datatag’s 100% conviction rate when used in evidence by the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Datatag Motorcycle Security Facts:

  • A report for the Motorcycle Industry Association has confirmed that a security marked machine is up to five times less likely to be stolen than one that is not marked.
  • Datatag has no annual fee and is transferable when a machine is sold.
  • Datatag is the preferred security marking system in the construction and agriculture industry and is widely used in the marine, cycle and car industries.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (December 19, 2011) ? Two-time GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Champions GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, and lead drivers Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty, will be joined by winning sports car driver Memo Gidley for the 50th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The January 26 ? 29 race is the 50th anniversary of the endurance event, and also the debut race for the team?s new No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Corvette Daytona Prototype.

The team made the announcement of its complete driver lineup for the 2012 Rolex 24 during the first of a two-day test session at Daytona International Speedway (DIS), where Gurney, Fogarty and Gidley will take their first laps on the 3.56-mile DIS road course in the new Corvette. Gidley replaces five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson who partnered with Gurney and Fogarty in the No. 99 GAINSCO ?Red Dragon? in the last four runnings of the Rolex 24.

?As soon as Jimmie told me he wanted to take a year off from the 24, I immediately thought of Memo,? said GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team owner Bob Stallings. ?We have known him a long time, he?s a really solid driver, he?s an American from California, and I have always held him in high regard. He?s just a terrific person, gets along really well with Alex and Jon, and is awesome on the track. He rarely lays a tire off the track. We just had a test in Texas last week and Memo was just as solid as expected. We feel very good about our driver lineup.?

Gidley has extensive experience in nearly every form of automobile road racing in the United States, including GRAND-AM Daytona Prototype competition. He joined with then-teammate Michael McDowell for a victory in the season-ending race at Mexico City in 2005 in a Finlay Motorsports BMW Riley, in addition to driving for other top Daytona Prototype teams in the following years.

?I am super pumped to be racing for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing,? Gidley said. ?They have been a team that is always in contention for a win or a championship, and as a driver this is a great environment to be in. It was very exciting to get a call from Bob asking if I would be interested in driving for him in the 24. His first question was whether I am ready for this. I told him I was ready last year… last month… and I?m ready NOW, so let?s do it. In the short time talking to and being around Bob, I realized that he is a great motivator and has fantastic energy that I believe is a key to his team?s success. I am really looking forward to being a part of the 50th Rolex 24 with such a great team.?

Gurney, who won the pole for the 2007 Rolex 24, is more than pleased with the arrival of his newest teammate at GAINSCO.

?We are very excited to have Memo join our team,? Gurney said. ?He has all the attributes we look for in order to help us win the Rolex 24 At Daytona. He is very quick, he is a team player, has lots of experience in Daytona Prototypes, stays out of trouble on the race track, is solid in all conditions, and is a nice guy on top of all that. When he showed up at our shakedown test, he fit in right away.?

Gidley continues an unintentional but somewhat uncanny trend for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing that has seen only drivers from California in the No. 99 ?Red Dragon? since Stallings stepped out of the cockpit after co-driving with Gurney in the team?s first year of competition. Gurney is a native of Irvine in Southern California, Fogarty hails from Portola Valley in Central California, Johnson comes from El Cajon near San Diego, while former team drivers Jimmy Vasser and Rocky Moran were born in the greater Los Angeles communities of Canoga Park and Pasadena, respectively. Gidley was actually born in La Paz, Mexico, but considers Central California his stateside home, as he and his family lived on a sailboat as ?anchor outs? in the San Francisco Bay when he was a boy.

?I am really happy to have Memo aboard for this year?s 50th anniversary Rolex 24,? Fogarty said. ?Memo has proven his speed not only in Daytona Prototypes, but in all categories of cars from Indy Car to sedans. He has the pace, 24-hour experience in both DP and GT, and he is another West Coast American. So he fits right in.?

Last week?s two-day test at Texas World Speedway was the first time GAINSCO?s new Corvette turned a wheel. All three drivers put in some laps during what was primarily a shakedown run.

?The Texas test went extremely well,? Stallings said. ?Obviously this is a car that we have to get familiar with. There are things that we have to learn about it and I suspect it will take two or three races for us to get a good handle on the car. Beyond that, the manufacturers themselves are doing a lot of learning. They have done a terrific job so far. When you think about how far they went from design to getting the car on the track, it?s a pretty short period of time.?

Gidley didn?t get a lot of time in the GAINSCO Corvette in Texas but quickly found both the car and the entire GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team to his liking.

?I really enjoyed being at the test at Texas World Speedway and driving the new Corvette Daytona Prototype,? Gidley said. ?I saw pictures of the new Corvette body and thought immediately that the car looked fantastic. Then when I saw it next to the old Riley body in the GAINSCO shop, it immediately made the old Riley look like a vintage car. It was exciting to take the car out for laps for the first time at Texas and I really liked how it felt. It really was a shakedown, but I do feel the potential to be very fast is there. I expect the race to be an interesting mix of performance from both the new and old cars, but in typical GAINSCO team fashion I expect the No. 99 to be at the front.?

GAINSCO concludes its 2011 on-track schedule on Tuesday at DIS but will return early in the New Year for the annual Roar Before The Rolex 24 At Daytona Test Days, January 6 ? 8. The 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona will be run at Daytona International Speedway (DIS), January 26 ? 29.

AJ Foyt Racing Hires Mike Conway To Drive No. 14 ABC Supply Indy Car

HOUSTON December 20, 2011 ? AJ Foyt Racing has hired Long Beach Grand Prix winner Mike Conway to drive the No. 14 ABC Supply Honda in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series.

Conway, who won the Long Beach Grand Prix in his 26th IndyCar start, brings strength on the road courses to the team. In 2011, he qualified in the top-10 six times on the road and street circuits, which is also where his four top-10 finishes came.

?With the Series having twice as many road courses as ovals, we looked for a driver who is fast on those tracks and Mike has certainly proved himself in that area,? said A.J. Foyt. ?I?m looking forward to working with him,? adding with a chuckle, ?I may even be able to give him a little advice when it comes to the ovals.?

Hopefully we can hit the ground running…

Mike Conway

?First of all I?d like to thank 2MB Sports Management and AJ Foyt Racing for making this deal come together. I can’t wait to start work with the AJ Foyt Racing team and to drive the No. 14 ABC Supply Car. It’s going to be an exciting season with the new cars and multiple engine manufacturers. Hopefully we can hit the ground running with off season developments and be quick out the box. I?m counting the days until the first test and the start of the season,? commented Mike Conway.

Conway made his first start in the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2009 driving for Dreyer-Reinbold. Towards mid-season he began capitalizing on his brilliant potential with several top-10 finishes before scoring his first podium ?a third place finish at California?s challenging Infineon Raceway.

In 2010, he was in position to post his fourth top-10 finish in six starts but on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500, he collided with a suddenly slowing Ryan Hunter-Reay, launching Conway into the catchfence resulting in season-ending injuries to his leg and back.

Signing with Andretti Autosport in 2011, Conway dispelled all doubts about his return to the cockpit with a strong fourth place qualifying run in the season opener in St. Petersburg and an incredible drive in the Long Beach Grand Prix. In that race, he qualified third but dropped to 21st after a problem on the first pit stop. Conway fought his way back to lead the final 14 laps after executing a couple of textbook passes on frontrunners Ryan Briscoe and Dario Franchitti, who finished second and third.

The British Racing Drivers Club recently awarded the Innes Ireland Award to Conway in recognition of his inspiring comeback from his 2010 Indy 500 accident. The award is given to the driver who best displayed the qualities of courage and sportsmanship epitomized by the late Innes Ireland, a British Formula 1 driver who was badly injured in the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix. He recovered to win three Grands Prix the same season including the U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen.

A.J. Foyt

A.J. Foyt

En route to Conway?s burgeoning IndyCar career, the 28-year-old Briton won several championships, triumphing in British Karting, the 2004 Formula Renault UK Series as well as the British F3 International Series in 2006. Conway captured the Macau Grand Prix in 2006 becoming the first British driver to do so since Darren Manning won it in 1999. Manning drove for the Foyt team from 2006-2008.

In 2007 and 2008, Conway raced in the very competitive GP2 Series (previously named Formula 3000), the feeder series to Formula 1. Conway, who won a sprint race in the streets of Monaco in 2008, also served as a test driver for the Honda Formula 1 team during that time.

“We all have big expectations for the upcoming season, and Mike shares our passion for getting the team back in victory lane,? Larry Foyt said. ?There is no doubt he has a ton of talent and, when combined with A.J.’s experience, I think we can accomplish great things together.”

Foyt?s ABC Supply team will take delivery of its 2012 Dallara this week and expects to start testing in early February.

Thierry Neuville will race in the 2012 WRC

Thierry Neuville, who is recognized as one of the rising stars in world rallying, will drive a Citroën DS3 WRC in the 2012 World Championship. The Belgian will race in a minimum of nine events.

Citroën Racing, which is heavily committed to the training and promotion of young drivers, will give Thierry Neuville the opportunity to prove himself at the topmost level in world rallying. The 22-year-old-driver from Saint-Vith in Belgium will be at the wheel of a Citroën DS3 WRC prepared by Citroën Racing Technologies.

Thierry Neuville, backed up by his fellow-countryman Nicolas Gilsoul, will race in nine of the thirteen rallies in the 2012 World Championship: Monte-Carlo, Sweden, Mexico, Portugal, Greece, Argentina, Finland, Germany and Great Britain. Depending on how the season unfolds, the French and Spanish rallies could be added to this programme.

Neuville made a name for himself by winning the Belgian Citroën Racing Trophy in 2009. In 2010, he drove a Citroën C2 S1600 in the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC), and he also raced in his first IRC rallies at the wheel of a Peugeot 207 S2000. In 2011 he won the Tour of Corsica and San Remo rallies and was in contention for the IRC title right up till the last event.

Olivier Quesnel (Citroën Racing Team Principal): ?Citroën Racing has been keeping a close eye on Thierry Neuville?s career for several years now. We felt that the time had come to give him a chance at the topmost level. Like Sébastien Loeb, and more recently Sébastien Ogier, Thierry will find himself in a team that will help him complete his training and consolidate it with results. It?s up to Thierry and Nicolas to seize this opportunity!?

Thierry Neuville: ?Ever since the moment I had the opportunity to drive the Citroën DS3 WRC in testing I?ve been dreaming of racing it. It?ll be the case in the Monte Carlo Rally, and I have to admit that I still have difficulty believing it! The 2011 season was a very positive one with two victories in two legendary rallies, the Tour of Corsica and the San Remo. I had to move up another step on the ladder and I?m very proud that Citroën Racing has put its trust in me for 2012. I?ll do everything in my power to repay their confidence. My aim for the coming weeks is not to skip any stages, listen to the advice I?m given and understand how the team and the car work. Citroën

One of the most anticipated motorcycles in Ducati’s 2012 lineup, the 1199 Panigale superbike has the highest horsepower-to-weight ratio ever in its class.

The 1199 features Ducati’s new Superquadro L-Twin that pushes 195 horsepower, but is contained in a Monocoque chassis that helped shaved 22 pounds on Ducati’s 2012 superbike.

The 1199 is available in standard, an “S” model and the sough-after “S Tricolore,” which is highlighted above in wallpaper.

The 1199 S Tricolore features all the standard additions of the “S” model, which includes front and rear Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) built by Ohlins. This system utilizes 43mm Ohlins NIX30 forks and an Ohlins TTX36 rear unit, which are both electronically adjustable in compression and rebound, while spring pre-load is manual.

Besides these features, and the Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Electronic Quick Shifter (DQS) and standout paint scheme, the 1199 Panigale S Tricolore also features standard Bosch ABS and the GPS-assisted Ducati Data Acquisition system.
